Off Limits!
off limits
The microwave is off limits for one week! I am challenging my family and myself to not use it. Just seven days. If we are successful, I'd like to get rid of it. It would be nice to free up some counter space. I've been reading a lot of nasty news about the magical heat box. I always did have my doubts about it. I never even owned one until a few years ago. It was so easy to fall under it's convenient spell though. Just google "microwave bad" if you wanna know what I am talking about.

On to happier food subjects...
spinach
Almost the end of the spinach from the garden. When it starts to put it's energy toward making seeds, it grows a bunch of little tiny leaves that are impossible to pick individually, so I just cut off the whole top and then we nibble it off the stems.

spinach pool
Eating spinach is fun!

And because I feel like blabbing some more about my little urban garden, just one of the reasons why summer is my favorite, here's a closeup...
hollyhock bud
It's pink it's pink! I was so excited to see that it was pink! Grown from seed. This plant takes up so much room in my tiny garden. I didn't know how big it would get. I unstrategically placed it in the front and it is blocking view of all the things behind it. Last year, it's first year, it made no flowers but somehow I decided not to rip it out. I wanted to see what color it was and if it was white it was gonna be out of there. But it's pink! How could I rip out a huge pink flower? There are so many buds on it! Well if it's gonna stay, it definitely has to move to a better spot. I'll decide it's fate at the end of the summer.

For anyone interested in my costume wedding photo album, here it is:

Warning! There are 117 photos, edited down from 848!
I've been telling people about this day for five years, and now I finally compiled the photos!

We've made it almost a year without a microwave now. I don't even notice it's gone, except on the rare occaisions that microwave popcorn sounds good. Even then it's not so bad cuz we get to bust out the popcorn maker and it's so much more fun that way!

That's super!
That's good news for me because I don't like micro-popcorn anyway. We have a hot air popper which is so exciting for the kids. My husband likes to pop it on the stovetop in olive oil with a little bit of sesame oil mixed in.

I thought your spinach was basil at first. It looks so perfect! I wish I could grow things but I have no dirt :(

:)
I am truly blessed to have a little pice of dirt, albeit rented, this close to NYC. Even though my landlord keeps doing "helpful" things to my garden. There was a little oak sapling. I was going to make it into a bonsai when it just got a little bigger. And I wanted to ask my husband which pot he wanted to use. Finally this morning we were both in the yard at the same time and I asked him and was going to show him the pretty little thing and it had been plucked and thrown aside! It was alive and well yesterday evening! OH!
And you've reminded me that I must plant basil...

funny theres always some food danger.

seems a latest study has found the process that causes browning and crunching on food actually causes cancer (crispy fries, crunchy bread, toasting , frying , baked items etc ...)

so I guess reheating a plate of food for half hour in a oven , (which is using more power as well) and making it crispy is probally as dangerous as reheating a plate of food in a microwave for 2 minutes, as far and cancer causing agents go.

interesting to see how it goes for you.

I'm sure I use mine more than I think, well each morning i cook my porridge in it for a start, but i do avoid using plastics in it :]

Gosh I know! We can't win. Either eat it raw or cold, right? I wanna get a crock pot. Of course then we will find out crocks are bad too!
